Steve Bruce’s first signing of the new season, Cristian Riveros will be able to show off his skills to Sunderland fans for the first time this evening as his country Paraguay warm up for South Africa with a trip to Dublin to take on the Republic LIVE on Skysports (7:45pm K.O.)

Riveros is expected to start in a patched up Paraguay team as coach Gerardo Martino has injury problems to contend with.

Another player expected to start is Sunderland defender, Paolo Da Silva who is very comfortable at the back for his country, despite not making the starting 11 for his club.

Update: Riveros starts (no.16) in central midfield with Da Silva (14) centre half.

Riveros started sloppily but settled looking good on the ball and playing some decent passes. Da Silva, as ever, looking comfortable and confident.

Overall though, a poor first half for Paraguay, creating very little. Da Silva partially at fault for Ireland’s 2nd goal by former SAFC man Liam Lawrence. Riveros looks to be a defensive midfielder and is steady without being spectacular.

Midway through the 2nd half, Riveros was substituted so the jury is still out on him. It will be very interesting to see him in the competitive nature of the World Cup.

I thought Da Silva was poor for both goals and Riveros just calmed things down in midfield for them….not much to shout about yet but will be supporting them in S. Africa
