Deja Vu For Coleman Once Again

Manager Chris Coleman cut a frustrated figure on the sidelines in Sunderland’s defeat to Brentford at the weekend as we hosted them at the Stadium of Light.

Welcoming Dean Smith’s side to our home soil, it was very much a case of deja vu as we fell to a two nil defeat on the day. A poor and slow start to the match saw us fall two goals behind following efforts from Kamo Mokotjo and Neal Maupay and we again gave ourselves a mountain to climb.

Speaking to the Official Site as he met with the media following the game, the former Welsh gaffer knew it was very much a case of ‘we have been here before haven’t we’ as he reflected on how the game played out.

Two nil down inside of the opening 28 minutes, and then Sunderland wake up and start creating chances and testing the opposition goalkeeper but again again the damage had already been done.

‘We have been here before haven`t we. The first 45 again. We are just nervous, and the opposition don`t have to work too hard to score a goal. If we look over the course of 90 minutes, there was more action in their last third than there was in ours, but we just never took those chances that came our way.’

With all of our other issues when it came to the performance, our Achilles heel continues to be leaking goals and then when opportunities fall our way, being unable to be clinical and finish them off.

‘They capitalised on theirs. Things are very negative at the moment, it is another defeat, but it is not just that it is the slow starts. The nervous starts. We are slashing at passes and knocking the ball out of play when we should be calmer and more composed. Then it gets more desperate but how many times have I stood here and said those things?’

Speaking after the game as he was, he went on to say.

‘We have got three days to turn another negative into something positive – it is as simple as that.’

Well those days have now passed as we go into tonight’s clash with Bolton Wanderers at the Macron Stadium so fans will soon know whether or not he found something positive in training.
