Sunderland have received a boost after news broke that striker Jermain Defoe does not want to leave despite the constant links with Bournemouth.

There has been various reports that have linked Defoe with a move back down south to team up once again with Bournemouth.

But the Daily Mail reports that stories of Defoe wanting to jump ship to go back to his old club are wide of the mark.

The 32 year old is happy to see out his time with the Black Cats so long as he can keep scoring goals.

Defoe spoke to the Daily Mail, saying: ‘One fan messaged me on Instagram and it was quite long about players not being committed. I messaged back and he couldn`t believe it.

‘I told him – nothing has changed, I want to score 20 goals for Sunderland this season. He said, “Ah okay, thanks”, and apologised.

‘I just want to be happy – and that means being in the team and scoring goals.’
