Sam Allardyce says that the number one priority for his side now is to improve the defence and stop letting goals in.

Sam was talking to the club’s official website ahead of Monday night’s clash with Crystal Palace, he says that stopping the defence being so porous is the key to keeping the club in the top flight.

In the first twelve games of the season, Sunderland have conceded 26 goals and at more than two per game, relegation is on the cards unless they do something about it fairly fast.

Big Sam told the official website: “My philosophy has always been you start from the back, and it goes without saying every team which wins the league has the best defensive record.

“When we are a conceding on average over two goals a game, that is the first thing which we have to stop and the players have to understand that.’
