Teemu Tainio was the shock departure prior to today`s transfer deadline.

Tainio has moved to Birmingham on loan for the season. He was one of four players to complete a move away from the club today.

As expected, Danny Collins moved to Stoke for £2.75m while Grant Leadbitter and Carlos Edwards joined Roy Keane`s Ipswich for £2.6m and £1.35m respectively.

The sale of Collins, Leadbitter and Edwards has completed somewhat of an overhaul of the squad, with Paul McShane, Michael Chopra, Greg Halford, Dean Whitehead and Anthony Stokes all completing permanent moves away from the club. The Black Cats have received in the region of £18m in transfer fees prior to any add-ons.

The biggest news from today never actually happened. The Black Cats were discussing a loan swap with Tottenham that would have seen Alan Hutton move to the North East and Anton Ferdinand return to London. Steve Bruce also failed in a move for Egytian international right back Ahmed Al-Muhammadi as his club did not want to send the player out on loan.

Sunderland`s transfer activity may not be over despite the closure of the transfer window, as the Daily Mirror have reported that Bruce has offered a contract to free agent right back Lucas Neill.
