Sunderland manager Chris Coleman has said he has to be realistic about what he can achieve in the January transfer window with limited funds available.
With it known that Coleman would ideally like to add at least four signing to the group before the deadline day window closes, he has begun that process with the recent loan capture of Jake Clarke-Salter from Chelsea, but he admitted to the Official Site that any and all dealings this month would likely be loans.
‘We need to look at the situation the club is in and be realistic about what we can get. At this moment we can`t go out and spend millions on players. But even if we could, the principle would still have to the same: trying to bring the right personality to the club.’
He went on to say.
‘This month we want to bring in more faces, but the focus is on the mentality of that player. We want someone who is hungry and can come into our dressing room and help others who are already here. It`s not easy to get the right person because of course there are other clubs in a similar predicament – a similar situation – to us. To get loan players it is a bit of a dog fight, but I think Jake is a good start for us and there`s still maybe two, three or four more that we`d like to do.’
With EFL rules permitting Sunderland to sign up to eight loan players in total, but only name five in any given match day squad, it’s believed Coleman has played with the idea of cancelling loan deals for Brendan Galloway and Jonny Williams, but Williams is a week away from a return and if we can keep him fit he should be an asset.
‘I`m really happy with Jake arriving. This window is all about bringing in the right type of people to the club. He is young, he`s hungry and he wants to achieve. He`s a really good boy as well, and if you look at his career so, albeit with under-23s and with England youth teams, he`s achieved some amazing things. It was the right time for him to come out on loan and we felt we were the right club for him; so did Jake. I am really pleased he`s going to spending time with us until the end of the season.’
