Coates is another Sunderland player that Big Sam has had shipped out to reduce the wage bill so that he can bring in fresh talent.

The club’s official website says Coates will remain with Sporting until the end of the season and then they could make the deal a permanent one should he impress.

Coates has only been with the Black Cats since 2014 after having a successful loan spell, he has made 32 appearances for the club and featured in twelve games since Sam Allardyce took over.
