Sunderland are already a month ahead of themselves from their points total compared to last season.

We never hit the 23 point mark until just before New Years eve and Lee Cattermole says this shows how well we have done so far this campaign.

Cattermole said: “You can see the club is going places and we all need to keep pulling together and working hard.

“No one has said it yet, but I think we all believe we can go somewhere.

“We`re going into a good run of games and we have to make the most of them.

“The gaffer pulled us to one side in training last week and said we need to try to get 10 or 12 points this month to get us into the top six.

“We`ve made a decent start and that`s helped with the league position.

“Last week, we were seventh, but there were a lot of teams on the same points.

“This week, we`ve moved clear of some of those sides.

“This period for the club is a big period.”

Cattermole, who was outstanding against West Ham, is also proud of another personal record at SAFC with his longest run of consecutive games.

He added: ‘I don`t need the papers to tell me when I`m doing well and not doing well, I know myself.

“I feel like I`m starting to hit a bit of form on the quiet.

“I haven`t missed a day`s training through injury.

“I`m up and down the pitch and not been sent off again! It`s nice to get a run of games.”
