Saturday’s big loss for the Black Cats was first-choice goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, who came off after a whack in the face.

The Belgian international broke his nose in the accidental collision with Aston Villa’s Emile Heskey and has since undergone surgery.

Mignolet now looks set for a spell on the sidelines, leaving Republic of Ireland ‘keeper Kieren Westwood as the club’s only senior goalkeeper.

Craig Gordon is still a long way off according to Steve Bruce whilst Trevor Carson tweaked his back in the warm-up for Bury at the weekend.

Speaking to The Chronicle Live, Bruce said:

“He [Mignolet] will have scans and we will see what they reveal.

“I would have thought he would be a doubt for next Saturday`s game.

“Craig [Gordon] is nowhere near and Trevor Carson hurt his back at Bury, so we will have to see how bad he is.”
