Michael Bridges has been linked with a third return to Sunderland after impressing at Carlisle last season.

The former Leeds and Bolton hitman was released by Mick McCarthy last summer after making only a handful of appearances and scoring two goals in Sunderland’s Championship winning season.

He moved on to Bristol City along with Marcus Stewart where he struggled, resulting in a free transfer move to League Two side Carlisle United. It was here that he revitalised his career as he fired in the goals that got Carlisle promoted, scoring 12 goals in 18 starts, often showing in the process that he was a class above in that division.

It is this form that has allegedly caught the eye of Sunderland and a host of other Championship clubs, and it is thought a fee of around £250,000 would be enough to take the player back.

Any speculation at this time must be taken with a pinch of salt however, as no takeover is yet complete and therefore no manager in place. Whether Bridges turns out to be a genuine transfer target for the new owners remains to be seen therefore, and any move would be sure to divide opinion should Bridges, still very popular on Wearside, make a return to his first club.
