Our television signals are about to make the digital crossover from the terrestrial channels we have all become accustomed to, since TV`s inception in the 1930`s, however across the country there seems to be a wider growing problem, the authorities are trying to ignore, which could hamper this whole project and that is the resurgence of black and white TV.
Spotted in sporadic locations over an array of channels, this black and white revival has mainly been confined to sports channels, particularly that of a footballing nature and bizarrely enough the mention of a championship club who adorn such colours as that of barcodes, although quite high on these channels` agenda at the start of the football season, has gained considerable over the top attention in recent weeks. This has coincided with this team`s fortunate promotion from a league sponsored by a fizzy pop, a poor league, a league which could make the likes of Fitz Hall and Mike Williamson and Kevin Nolan, look like world beaters…err well actually it did.
This ever growing trend of black and white bias has been somewhat nauseating, perhaps bitter to taste, especially for those watching prime time red and white television sets down the road from these terrestrial gremlins. Why should such a superior standard of football be inflicted with continued, uninterrupted coverage from the lesser leagues, when surely, the red and white HD ready alliance have earned their coveted position at the top of the sporting tree and thus be top of the pecking order come the order of play on what we see on the box.
Time and time again, black and white transmissions were endured, sometimes live on BBC 2, instantly leaving one looking for a refund on their TV licence, whilst Sky cameras bought a room at the Gateshead Marriott such was their prolonged stay in the vicinity. The satellite company even made a nice programme about the resurgence of the black and whites, even mentioning it when supposedly analysing the Premier League game between Everton and West Ham. Enough is enough.
It has left a number of punters scratching their heads. If our beloved red and whites departed the big time, would we be afforded such pleasured of seeing our team on the telly every Saturday evening or Sunday lunchtime? Would we bollocks, so why the over the top arse kissing of fickle majority?
One can only pray for the advancement of this forthcoming 3D ideology, combined with Nicam digital surround sound, it will be almost surreal to be sat in one`s living room, enjoying the comical failings of a club still far outpunching in its weight, with fans as delusional as the notion of flying pigs, as if we were in Castle Grey Skull itself. The irony though in the relegation of Sporting Club “Barcacastle”, should it arise, would be the instant rise in the number of black and white programmes once more; the media circus vamped up time and again to keep the romanticism of the supposed ‘world`s best fans` dub, playing on repeat to the battered souls of the nation`s armchair viewer and then they wonder why they are the neutral fan`s most hated second club in the country?
The cost of a colour TV licence is £145.00. A black and white one costs a mere £49.00. Does anybody else feel they are being short-changed here?
