Sunderland have almost sealed a deal to bring Bordeaux striker Wahbi Khazri to the Stadium of Light, the Ligue 1 club have announced.

It was only yesterday that it transpired that Sam Allardyce had turned his attention to the Tunisia international amid talk that all hope had been abandoned of landing Swansea’s Andre Ayew.

Aston Villa and Everton were also said to be interested in the player’s services, but Sunderland are the club that have agreed a fee.

Bordeaux released a statement earlier today which read: ‘The club has reached an agreement with Sunderland for the transfer of Wahbi Khazri.

‘The playmaker has a great opportunity with the English club. We have therefore allowed him to negotiate.’
