Bent, who scored a sublime 25 goals in his debut season for the Wearside club, has been left ‘disappointed’ by his snub from the final 23 to travel to South Africa.

Many fans will be guttered by this selection from Fabio, and many feel robbed to see Heskey in front of him after such a poor season and also poor showing against Japan. However, the Italian manager obviously wanted two target men in Crouch and Heskey, and two strikers with pace in Rooney and Defoe to play off each other.

Bent done well in his only chance to shine in the friendly against Japan but failed to take any chances in a game where the service was next to non existant.

Bruce told the official website today: ‘I have always said to myself – if you play well and do your best for Sunderland then there is a chance you can go to the biggest tournament in the world.

‘But obviously on this occasion it has not worked out.

‘Straight away from when Mr Capello spoke to me and told me I wouldn’t be involved in the 23-man squad my thoughts turned to next season and how I can improve on what I have done for Sunderland this year,’ he said.

‘I am going to take some time off now and rest my bones after what has been a great season for me and get ready for next year.

‘It’s a case of fully concentrating on my football for Sunderland and doing my best for them.’

Every Sunderland fan will feel upset about this choice but this can only help our football club as he recovers over the Summer after an amazing season.

All the best Darren and here is hoping you can continue your hot streak in front of goal for many season to come.

Its bordering on criminal that Heskey is going whilst Bent goes home. Cant think of many other nations that would drop a striker with 20 odd goals for one with 3.

Maybe unfair, but expected, I’m afraid. Did anyone really think he’d leave Heskey at home? His only alternative to Heskey would’ve been Zamora, who is injured. Bent’s a poacher and just doesn’t get enough credit for what he does.

Bent should’ve gone to SA. Period.

Shocking decision. While other teams have squad strength to leave the likes of Ronaldinho, Zanetti etc etc at home, we have to be content seeing players like Heskey, SWP and f***ing Warnock going to South Africa. Seriously, the standard of English players is a joke.

Nonsense that Heskey gets picked ahead of Bent… no matter who Rooney says he prefers, Capello is the manager!!!

It is a sore one given that he has scored 25 in a season in a top league…..Would he have been there if he was in a top four team?????????……..Probably!
