This shocking incident took place in a pub before the game where a male was tired of waiting to be served in a busy pub shouted: ‘Don’t treat me like I am black’.

Shirley Bent was standing close by to this comment and challenged this so called ‘fan’ and asked him not to speak in this way.

The news broke as a downbeat Darren posted on his twitter page: ‘So we get beat by Wigan and to make matters worse my mum gets racially abused by a Sunderland fan. I won’t stand for that. It’s an absolute disgrace.’

Sunderland AFC do not tolerate racism in any shape or form and this luckily appears to be an isolated incident, however we need to stamp this out or face losing our best player or players over this event.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police, who were called to the pub following the alleged incident, confirmed it was looking into the matter.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police, added: ‘We are working with Greater Manchester Police and Sunderland AFC in investigating this incident.’

Inquiries are on going and anyone with information is asked to contact Northumbria Police on 03456 043 043.
