Bizarrely enough for a 5pm deadline Sunderland have now announced the second loan move since then, as Arnau Riera has joined Southend till January, following Keane’s signing of ex-flowerpot man Marton Fulop from Spurs.

The move is subject to football league clearance, as is Fulop’s, but that is expected to be a formality.

High expectations followed Riera’s signing from Barcelona B after a successful trial spell, when in reality we’d simply signed a player from a reserve team who play in the second division in Spain. But it’s understandable that we’d get all excited about an Arnau Caldentey Riera, which is the coolest name we’ve had at the club since the formidable Stefan Schwarz.

The Spaniard will be able to play this weekend vs the mighty Colchester, and it will be interesting to see how he does. So far Sunderland’s loans out have had varied success, from Jon Stead’s cracking goals at Derby, to the poor Rory Delap’s sickening injury at Stoke.

He is the 10th player out on loan now, and if Keane intends on making everyone of them permanent then it only adds to the speculation that some real upheaval is planned in January.
