Dick Advocaat has left his players in no doubt that their performance at Bournemouth at the weekend was far from good enough.

Sunderland came away from the Vitality Stadium with nothing after crashing to a 2-0 defeat thanks to early strikes by the home side.

The Mirror reports that Advocaat was embarrassed with his side and admitted that he felt sorry for the fans that made the trip from the North West to watch their heroes in action.

Advocaat told the paper after the game: “We have to be ashamed of what we did today.

“I will look in the mirror, but I have told the players they have to do that as well – hopefully they will come up with an answer.

“We are all well paid and the fans paid their last penny to travel 700 miles to watch us.

‘I feel very sorry for them and I really, honestly, mean that.”
