Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat had to admit that his side deserved to lose the game against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

The Black Cats suffered a mauling at the hands of Palace who netted four goals which included a Yannick Bolasie hat trick in the space of 17 second half minutes.

Advocaat watched the defeat and said that he wasn’t angry with his side, he also backed them to bounce back and do what is necessary to hold onto their Premier League status.

Conor Wickham showed that there is some life in the team when he grabbed a consolation goal very late on, but here was to be nothing like the show the side put on against Newcastle United last time out.

Advocaat told reporters: ‘We had a good performance last week against Newcastle, but today, we weren’t in the game.

‘I’m not angry with the players, because they tried to do their best.

‘I won’t criticise players individually but our defending today was not of the highest level. We have to improve as a team and it doesn’t help if I start shouting at everybody.’

Next up for Sunderland is Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.
